Title	Water Quality of Hyrum Lake and Its Relationship to Algal Blooms;
Description	Hyrum Lake, located in Hyrum Lake State Park (Cache County, Utah) serves as a major recreational attraction and source of irrigation water for the Cache Valley area of Utah. Constructed in 1936, Hyrum Lake has a surface area of 475 acres and a capacity of 15,300 acre feet (42). The main Influent stream, the Little Bear River, (total annual discharge of 63,000 acre feet), drains an area of 220 square miles. Included in this watershed are approximately 2,000 acres of cropland (42) and several dairy farm operations, many of which are located along the Immediate drainage of the Little Bear River. In addition to the Little Bear River, four small streams enter Hyrum Lake from dairy farm feedlot operations located along the north-eastern and eastern shoreline. In August 1969, recreational use of Hyrum Lake declined almost 75 percent (28) at a time concurrent with a massive blue-green algal bloom. Lynn identified the bloom organism as phanizomenon flos-aquae. The organism has subsequently reappeared in bloom proportions each summer since 1969. Due to the detrimental effect on the aesthetic value of Hyrum Lake and water quality for recreational use, determination of the parameters governing this algal growth is essential if any attempt at long term restoration of the recreational value of Hyrum Lake is to be undertaken in the future. Objectives. The purpose of the study was to determine the conditions supporting the algal growth in Hyrum Lake. This required meeting the following objectives: 1. To determine the relationship between nitrogen and/or phosphorus, and growth of A. flos-aquae. Such information being beneficial in predicting which, if either, is present in excessive amounts to support the algal bloom. 2. To statistically evaluate feedlot effluent streams and the Little Bear River itself in regard to their role as significant point sources of nutrients thus determining the magnitude of cultural eutrophication (enrichment) of Hyrum Lake. This was accomplished by planned comparisons, utilizing the random¬ ized block design (36, 48) for the analysis of variance among twenty-two sampling sites. 3. To determine the value of coliform bacteria tests as a rapid diagnostic technique useful in locating and identifying sources of nutrients which support algal growth. This being dependent on the extent of the correlation between coliform bacteria and nutrient concentration from animal wastes. 4. To investigate and determine what, if any, limnological parameters affect the concentration or distribution of nitrogen, phosphorus, and A. flosa-quae. i 5. To recommend solutions or methods to alleviate the algal bloom in Hyrum Lake.
