PROGRESS REPORT '
CWRR-13
Fiscal Year 1969
THE STUDY OF THE PHYSICAL, CHEMICAL, AND BIOLOGICAL NATURE
OF WATER QUALITY UNDER UTAH CONDITIONS
Project Started: July 1, 1967
Project Will End: June 30, 1970
Principal Investigators: John M. Neuhold, Ph.D.
Frederick J. Post, Ph.D.
Norman B. Jones, M.S.
Gary Z. Watters, Ph.D.
■
Progress during this past year involved completing a series of samples
to reflect seasonal variation of microorganisms, planktons, bottom organisms,
and the primary production rates in the pond system. In addition, it became
evident that circulation within the ponds in relation to the flow in and out
was such that short circuiting appeared to exist. An effort to elucidate
the circulation patterns in the ponds and their water exchanged was under¬
taken in the fall of 1968 by Dr. Gary Z. Watters, using dye-tracing techniques.
The data in this report is presented in five sections: (1) circulation
patterns, (2) chemical analyses and physiological parameters, (3) primary
production and fish production, (4) bacteriology and public health, and (5)
plankton and benthic form of distribution.
Work on the above mentioned phases will continue throughout the summer
of 1969, at which time the data will then have been completely assimilated,
and modelling on the system will begin. An effort was made to model portions
of the system earlier, however, failed for lack of complete data and suffi¬
cient control. For this reason, modelling has been put off until complete
data has been collected, at which time we feel modelling should proceed
rather rapidly.
