[Ruth's nursing activities during World War I were compiled from several sources: her autobiography, History of My Life by Ruth C. Hansen Bruerton, written in 1953, family pictures supplied by a grandson, Richard G. Wade, Jr., and newspaper clippings in the position of Gary B. Hansen. The first two pages present the highlights of Ruth's World War I nursing service as summarized by Helen Hansen in 1985. Ruth *s own handwritten account of her World War I service, taken from her autobiography, is then presented. This material was assembled by her nephew, Gary B. Hansen in, July 2006.]
Ruth C. Hansen received three years of nursing training at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah, graduating with the class of 1913. In the fall of 1915 she took a post-graduate course at Cook County Hospital, Chicago, Illinois in the field of surgery. From there she went to the Polyclinic Hospital in New York and continued her studies in the field of surgery, graduated in the Spring of 1916. Following her World War 1 experience described below, she obtained additional schooling at the University of California, Berkeley in the College of Public Health and received her public health degree in 1922.
