Description	Design Workshop. Inc. Kananaskis Village (Alberta, Canada) Design Workshop, Inc. began working for the Province of Alberta in 1979 as principal planner for this project. In this role, Design Workshop prepared a master plan for the Kananaskis Valley, organizing a concept for visitor accommodations, conference center, and recreational uses for the central village, and participated in every aspect of design and implementation. The firm began with an overall environmental analysis of the 51,000 acres. As a result of this study, a site was selected for the central village which would serve as accommodations and services for visitors to the 1988 Calgary Olympics. Design Workshop's responsibility for the village has included programming and design of the village core; preparation of developer packages for the individual development parcels within the project; evaluation and selecrion of developers; and managing the design review process to insure the individual projects will fit the village plan. The world-class resort program includes four hotels, commercial and retail space, conference facilities and complete recreational amenities. Creation of the architectural and landscape image played a critical role in the success of the project, with an overall emphasis on the creation of an identifiable, appropriate sense of place. This project cost approximately $58 million (Canadian $) for the central core of 100 acres and regional infrastructure, and was opened in December of 1987. Contact: Mr. Neil Taylor (403) 427-2501
