MEMORANDUM TO: Kurt, Mark S. FROM: Jim Heid DATE: January 25, 1992 RE: Sustainability Jay and I attended a conference on desert development on Friday and one of the sessions I sat in on was Sustainable development, Below is a couple of the key points made and I thought of interest; 1) A sustainable community cannot rely on temporary resources. 2) A sustainable community cannot destroy the non-economic systems that it is a part of. 3) A sustainable community maintains a balance of currency. 4) A sustainable community generates a balance of value created. 5) A sustainable community operates within a time scale that can react to changes. Other important points: A sustainable system does not imply justice! There are no models for sustainablity, only remnants of various cultures or communites that had pieces of sustainability. We need to develop new measurements for health of a system in order to appropriately assess sustainability. We need to reduce the need for consumption on a site specific basis and measure a settlement's ability to contribute back to the system. One of the best speakers was a planner from Pima College. We should try to meet with him when you guys are down for the Starr Pass Charrette.
