Title	Chicanos in Utah: an exploratory study
Description	This exploratory study written in 1972 sought to develop a baseline of data characterizing the social situation of Utah's Chicano who was being served by various human service agencies. Data was also obtained on the staff of these agencies. This study was modeled on the U.C.L.A. Mexican American Study Project published under the title, The Mexican Americans; the Nation's Second Largest Minority, in 1960. The present study provided basic demographic data in three broad areas: (1) Social Services, (2) Education, and (3) Life Style. Data were collected relative to the following institutions subsumed under these three general rubrics: 1. Social Services: Corrections, family services, assistance payments, vocational rehabilitation, and employment security; 2. Education: Public schools, primary and secondary; 3. Lifestyle: Family characteristics; language; employment patterns; housing; social origins; migration patterns; religious affiliations; educational and occupational aspirations/expectations, etc. The first purpose of the study was to determine the extent to which Chicanos avail themselves, as clients, of the services of these social institutions, as listed above. The second purpose, was to ascertain the extent of participation of Chicanos as personnel, as staff members of these institutions. That is, to what extent do the institutions have on their staffs personnel with a sympathetic insight of the cultural foundations of those caught up in the cycle of poverty and ignorance mentioned above. Additionally, a prime concern was to determine the capacity in which these Chicano staff are employed, if at all. A third purpose of the study was to attempt some understanding of the mechanisms for articulating between the needs of the clients and the availability of the services. Furthermore, some attempt to evaluate the adequacy of these services was undertaken,
