Letter from Owen M. DeSpain to Frank Clark, dated February 12, 1953

              United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service Cache National Forest.  Logan, Utah February 12, 1953.  I Information – Cache General.  Mr. Frank Clark Malad, Idaho  Dear Friend Frank;  We value highly the copy of the authentic report of the killing of “Old Ephraim” we retained when we sent the copies to you.  I have listened to several individuals the past year tell stories about your experience with this bear.  It is disgusting to me, and I know it would be to you, to listen to them.  We feel there are a good many people now in this area who have never read a true account of your encounter with this bear.   Also a good many people have been mislead [misled] by these stories that have no resemblance to the facts.  For this reason we would like your permission to have your story printed in the Logan paper just as you have written it.  We could furnish the newspaper with a copy if you agree to having it printed.  Please let us know and send your reply in the enclosed envelope.  Very truly yours, [signature] Owen M. DeSpain, Owen M.
