After the last week of presentinq folk artists at the £>mi thsonian"'B American F'olklife Festival? 1 flE?w hofne then rushed around 'Salt Lake City? as I have been rushinq now seeminqly for months. Now I sit in a farmhouse in Grouse Creek? Utah. The breeze cominq in the window could be the only sound. A vivid moon in a crisply focused sky of stars could be the only siqht. But instead we have created commrrsnd central. The sound is a trio of taps on three? Kaypro computers? -all manned by interpreters of the day. These v^ords are a tired tenor of that combo. The siqht is much like a E*-~qrade military set. There? swe computers on foldinq tables. Cables? cameras? tape recorders? cases- are steicked in corners. Detailed maps Ea~B posted on the walls-. It well could have 3. script vMhere the army is called to a remote place where a flyinq s-aucer has been spotted. A temporary headquarters is created to monitor the drama. I am an officer there waitinq for a drama to unfold? confident that it will. It always does. Luckily for our work here in Grouse Creek? the drama does not have to include flyinq sauccsrs? nor does it even have to include qreat p e r f o r m e r s w h o can w o w the c r o w d s o n the W a s h i n q t o n M a11 w i t h their folksy demonstrations.
