BIOGRAPHICAL MATLRIALj DR. JOSEPH A. GEDDES
Professor Joseph Aroh Seddes, a long-tine friend end leader of the
cooperative movement and a pioneer in the founding of the Utah Cooperative
Association, was born November 27, 1884, at Plain City, Utah*
He has been a member of the Board of Directors and of the Executive
Committee of the Utah Cooperative Association from 1937, when it was organised,
until the present time (1968).      He has been labeled by members of UCA's
management staff as the "guiding light4* of the organisation*
Be served as a Director of the Consumers Cooperative Association of Kansas
for 12 yearst he has been a member of the Board of Directors of National
Cooperatives, Ino« (3 years} and served for about 10 years on the Board of
Directors of the Cooperative League of the U* S. A«
One of the nation's leading sociologists, Dr» Geddes received his A* Be
degree from Brigham Young University. Provo, Utah, in 1907} his U. A* degree
from Columbia in 1913 and his PhD from the same school in 1924. He attended
the New York School of Soolal Work in 1938*
Academic Interests
Dr. Geddes was invited to ^oln the faoulty of the Utah State University
(formerly Utah State  Agricultural College)  in 1926-27 with the rank of
Associate Professor in sociology»   He was also to direct rural research work
