No. 1

1916 RESULTS SHOW
WEBER BUREAU
VERY ACTIVE
Weed Campaign Attracts Attention of
United States Department
of Agriculture.
The first county-wide weed campaign
in the United States, so far as we have
been able to find out, was conducted by
the Bureau, giving the following results: 98 per cent of the Canada Thistle at Huntsville has been eradicated;
58 per cent of the farmers cleaned their
farms of noxious weeds; 83 per cent of
the county roads were cleaned; 91 per
cent of the railroads cleared their right-
of way; 42 per cent of the canal companies cleaned their systems.
The Department of Agriculture has
complimented us on the results.
Our potato co-operation grew 100
bushels per acre more than the average
within the county. Now $4.00 per lb.
or^lOO per cent was saved by the Bureau on corrosive sublimate.
One hundred dairy cows were tested
out for butter fat.
Have saved the Hooper and Plain
City people $800 for engineering services on their drainage districts.
Have influenced the majority of our
farmers who wish to borrow money to

ANNOUNCEMENT.
We take pleasure in presenting to the
farmers of Weber County this first issue of the Farm Bureau News. The
paper will be published monthly and
regularly sent to all paid-up members of
the Weber County Farm Bureau. By
this means we hope to keep in closer
touch with our members. We shall try
to present timely farm topics and items
of interest about farms and farmers in
the county.
It is not our purpose to compete with
the local cr agricultural press. Our paper
will deal with farm matters of local interest and will contain all official announcements of the bureau organization
to members of the district associations
throughout the country.
We believe our advertisers are reliable
firms. Their support has made it possible for us to publish this paper. Within the next month or two we expect to
include in the publication an exchange
column for the free use of members who
wish to buy or sell farm products, seed,
plants, stock, farm implements, etc. We
shall be glad to have the farmers
throughout the couny send in such advertisements in order that we may establish this department as early as possible.
THE MANAGEMENT.
HOOPER FARMERS
ALIVE TO DRAINAGE PROBLEM
Preliminary Surveys Have Been Made
Showing Average Cost to Be
$10.50 Per Acre.
The residents of Hooper have for a
long time seen the need of drainage and
have demonstrated, in a degree, what
can be done by giving attention to that
problem. This section has suffered from
the general practice of the past in the
establishment of irrigation projects;
that of considering that "Water is the
life of the soil."
When farming operations began here
nearly half a century ago and irrigation
water was poured upon the soil, a high
state of fertility was discovered. Good
yields of grain and other crops were had
nearly everywhere and especially on the
lower lands. More and more water was
applied as farming became more extensive and intensive and the water table
began to rise gradually until froin surface wells, which were formerly ten to
fifteen feet deep, water can now be
'' bailed'' without the use of pole or
rope.
