VOL.4. NO. I
MARCH 1940
LOCAL ASSOCIATIONS ASSUME MAJOR RESPONSIBILITY FOR DIRECTION OR U.C.A,
EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE IS INCREASED TO FIVE MEMBERS. A SYSTEM OF BROKERAGE
IS ESTABLISHED.
Many have given expression to the belief that the 1^40 Annual Meetings of the
U.C.A. -ere not only the most important that have ever been held but that they mark
a favorable turning point in the growth of cooperation in Utah,
LOCAL MEMBER ASSOCIATIONS ASSUME MAJOR CONTROL
The Self-Kelp Cooperative Board organized the Utah Cooperative Association. It
was its purpose to establish a central wholesale which would take care of warehousing needs of locals and at the same time serve as a buying and selling agency for
its members. It was hoped that member associations, consisting of self-help and
consumer units, would soon be in a position to take over the new institution. Today
that goal has largely become a reality. Seven member units are now represented on
the U.C.A. Board of Directors with one member each. These work with four board
members who are appointed by the Self-Help Board, The president of the board of
directors is a representative of one of the local societies.
THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE IS INCREASED FROM THREE TO FIVE MEMBERS
Since the U.C.A. was organized the immediate direction of its business has been
carried on under the supervision of an Executive Committee of throe members, one of
whom was the manager, one the president of the U.C.A. Board of Directors, and the
third the representative of the U.C.A. on the Board of Directors of North Kansas
Consumers' Cooperative Association. On February 24, in view of the important problems
which must be faced, the directors accepted of a plan to increase the Executive
Committee to five members, the two new ones coming from two districts formed by
dividing the state east and west at the north boundary of Utah County, H. H. Cutler,
of the Logan Consumers1 Cooperative Association was selected to represent the north
district and Boyd Buchanan of the Sevier Valley Consumers1 Cooperative Association was
selected from the south district. The Executive Committee now consists of Boyd
Buchanan, Chairman; Arnold Richins; Jos, A. Geddes; H. H. Cutler and the Acting
Manager, W. B. Robins. Boyd Buchanan was also made Chairman of the Board of Director;?
