"USU'S LAND-GRANT ROLE AND CONTINUING COMMITMENT TO AGRICULTURE"
ADDRESS BY STANFORD CAZIER TO THE UTAH FARM BUREAU FEDERATION
MARRIOTT HOTEL SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH
16 NOVEMBER 1984
It is a pleasure for me to join with you today at this convention of the
State Farm Bureau and to bring to you the regards and greetings of Utah State
University. Utah State University is proud of its long-standing partnership
with agriculture, and the main point I want to leave with you today is that
Utah State University is unequivocally committed to a continuance of that
special relationship.
I personally have a deep and abiding respect for the American farmer,
having been raised on a farm myself; although when I compare the kinds of
farms I knew as a boy in Nephi to the sophisticated and larger-scale
operations of today, I am greatly impressed with the complexity and
sophistication of today's agriculture. The modern farm of the 1940s used a
four-cylinder engine tractor with 45 horsepower and a four-speed
transmission—probably at a cost of a little over $1,000. In the 1980s it is
not uncommon to see a huge four-wheel drive model tractor with a six-cylinder
turbo-charged diesel engine generating more than 300 horsepower. The
transmission will have 20 speeds, and the cab will be equipped with
sophisticated monitoring equipment, air conditioning, and even an AM/FM radio
and cassette player. A tractor like this will cost as much as four Cadillacs
and do the work of many of the earlier models.
I must tell you that even though I pursued a different career, I have not
forgotten the valuable lessons and skills I learned during my early years on
the farm. In fact, I have issued a challenge to Doyle Matthews, which he has
yet to accept, to a cow-milking contest.
