this copy is for you Cantwell 3/1/57 Burnett Hendryx Copy Mitchell Stewart Your letter 2/19 re MOVIE Director Sorgatz was unable to make it down to Salt Lake for the Promotion Committee meeting held Friday, but Bentley was here, and we went over your corrrespondence with Trecket. Here is our thinking on the various points in question. CHOICE OF FILM ; - This and all other technical matters should be left to Tecker with your knowledge serving as a double check. TIME OF FILMING - This also should be worked out by you and Trecker, and will probably depenti much on arrangements most convenient for him. If he can clear the "torrid zone" early and be North of Prescott by early July it will make his trip more enjoyable. This of course would make it necessary to ljork from South to North which might not tie in with the plan of making the film from North to South. If possible, it would be logical for him to FOLLOW me in the various areas because this would make it possible to give him an outline of support secured in each area [and]/I could probably line up key people for him to contact when he arrived. We must not, however plan on this, unless it just happens to work out since I will have to work entirely independent of all other operations and could not possibly grauantee to be in any given area at ant particular time. Trecker will also have to work on his own schedule if he gets the job done in four week s ... in fact neither of us will have any time to lose. THEME AND TITLE - This is a point which depends to a great extent on one question... how commercial can the film be and get distribution. By that I mean how far can we go in promoting our Association and its members. For example: 1- We plan to feature the new membership placque in the Membership Roster, the Brochure, and all of our future promotional publicity making a direct appeal for patronage of members to the total exclusion of all others. Could we carry this theme into the movie by using the placque in the titles ? Or by mention in the sound. 2 - The Association has gone on record to the effect that all three highway emblems MUST be given equal billing in all of our promotion. We would therefore have bo use them together as they appear qn the stationer in the general titles. This does not mean however that shots of the individual markers could not be picked up along the line. However, the international theme must be maintained throughout. 3- As to title, we will come up shortly with a highly dramatic and descriptive phrase to use as the title lira on the cover of the brochure. IF this same phrase turns out to be suitable also for the movie title, it would ba an ideal situation. The brochure, movie, roster, etc. should as far as possible all be considered as interlocking units of ONE promotional theme, and tied together as closely as is practical. Another thought on the title; Could a " Name the Movie" contest be promoted ? If this were done, the first prize would, of course have to be something worth while such as an all expense weeks vacation in one of our various recreational areas Etc. Such a contest, if properly handled, would result in considerable publicity. There is, however , one very seriousdrawback. Such a project would require a considerable
