My dear London,
I have your letter of March 16th but have
already written you, theletter, as it happens, having been
posted yesterday, formally accepting both the "Kempton Wace
Letters" and "The People of the Abyss". The same mail as
brought your Setter of the I6th also brings me a letter from •
the I'acmillan Company, under date March 20th, and also a package
from them which, from their letter, I imagine to be a set of
uncorrected proofs of the "Kempton T7aoe Letters".
In regard to what you say about our taking some
of your books and not all. Certainly I am quite willing to
engage to take them all; that is what I desire to do,but the
only difficulty in the way is the fact that you have allowed
somebody else to come between us who can more or less dictate
terms. You see it would not be fair for us to bind ourselves
to you to take all your matter and then have a third party, who
is interested in another house, put up the prices on us. Lat
me suggest this, which I think will entirely neat your viewst-
