Title	Selected Letters from the Daryl Chase Correspondence
Summary	These letters dealing with racially sensitive issues were selected from the much larger collection of correspondence written to and by Daryl Chase during his fourteen years as president of Utah State University. Chase became the tenth president of USU in 1954 and served until 1968. During his tenure the size of the institution (both in terms of its student body and physical setting) increased considerably. The make-up of the student body changed, as well. As a result of World War II, many returning veterans registered for classes in the late 1940s and early 1950s. The institution also entered the international field through its extension efforts in the Middle East and elsewhere around the world. The hundreds of international students who came as a result brought added diversity to the campus, as did the recruitment of African-American student athletes. Chase spent the entirety of his professional career in Utah, and the changing complexion of the campus required Chase to confront not only the prejudices and preconceptions of some alumni and local business owners, but his own, as well.

Transcript	utah st.a.te university daryl chase president logan utah college of forest range and wildlife management lewis m turner dean september 24 1957 j j f c /^ president daryl chase campus dear president chase i feel very badly about my son's native state of arkansas morning's paper is about as much as i can stand this however i think i should mention to you an alleged instance of segregation which took place here in logan we accepted a japanese student by the name of jack ogino from los angeles he came up to logan last week and according to the story most of which we got from mrs waddoups in the admissions office moved into a room and stayed there one night the next morning he was thrown out figuratively by his landlady who briefly informed him that the people in the neighborhood didn't like japanese people and she didn't want to keep him according to the story he then appeared at the registrar's office to withdraw from the college apparently mrs waddoups talked to him and tried to prevail
