foreign student housing discrimination clause violated charges that some local land lords are violating the no-dis crimination clause in their uni versity homeowner statement 9f agreement were revealed wednesday by lamar fraud sen foreign student advisor frandsen indicated that he had turned over a list of names to the university housing depart ment for possible action the incidents of discrim ination came to light a week ago when frandsen and some co workers made a check of land lords using the university provided housing list frandsen called eight different landlords pre tending that he was interested in renting an apartment within five or ten minutes after find ing a vacancy a call was placed to the same landlord by a foreign student with a heavy accent in several cases the foreign students were turned down va cancies existed the next day when another call was placed to the same landlord these are clear violations of the agreement frandsen said section d of the university housing statement of agreement which a landlord must sign to gain access to the university housing list reads tenants are accepted without regard to race creed or national origin if university housing au thorities decide to hold hearings concerning the landlords invol ved the landlords will face the prospect of being restricted from the housing list any landlord who rents more than four apartment units may be eligible for prosecution under a federal civil rights housing law landlords who rent less than the required number of units subject to federal restrictions can rent their apartments to anyone unless they have signed a no-discrimination clause with the university frandsen indicated that he in tends to send a letter to all off campus landlords on the uni versity list asking their coopera tion in renting to foreign stu dents this community probably has a greater opportunity than any in the whole world to have a positive influence for good human relations frandsen said i believe in terms of our opportunity we've dropped the ball frandsen said that foreign stu dents must also accept a chal lenge they must determine that they are going to be bet ter housekeepers he indicated that many foreign students come from a culture where they are waited on by maids some land lords don't want to rent to fore ign students because they don't know how to take care of an apart ment he indicated although some have trou ble many foreign students do find apartments off campus frandsen said others have problems though he said in some cases they take apartments that nobody else wants '» we defend our prejudices through all kinds of rationali zations frandsen said one lady told me she only rents to lds i guess if i'm going to be prejudice said frandsen i'd rather be prejudice for people rather than against them "
