Brief Life History of Samuel Roskelly
Samuel Roskelly was born January 1, 1837, at Devonport, Devon,
England. He was the youngest child of Thomas and Ann Kit tRoskelly.
He was baptised into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter--Day Saints
on December 3, 1851, at, Bern Pool near Devonport, Devon, England, by
Elder James Caffall and confirmed in Hayden's Rooms, Davenport, on
December 7, 18-51 by Elder William Gill Mills. Samuel Roskelly was
ordained a deacon on January 8, 1852 by Elder Gill Mills at Devonport;
he was ordained a pries [priest] on December 19, 1851 by Elder John Chislett
at Devon; ordained an Elder on March 15, 1853 by Elder Joseph Hall at
Devonport.
Samuel Roskelley emigrated to Zion, leaving Liverpool, England
on March 26, 1853 on the ship "Falcon," with Captain Wade in command.
After a voyage of seven weeks and two days, they landed at New Orleans,
Louisiana. From there they traveled up the Mississippi River to
Keokut, Iowa and thence arossed the state of Iowa, arriving at Counsel
Bluffs, lowas, July 4, 1853. From there they crossed the great plains
arriving at Salt Lake City, Utah, on Sunday, October 16, 1853 with
nothing but what he stood up in. He knew no soul except those acquaintances he had made traveling with the company of saints from England.
Samuel Roskelley received his endowments on August 28, 1855
in the Endowment House, Salt Lake City, Utah, He was ordained a member
of the second quorum of Seventies, July 1, 1855 by President Lewis
Robins in the old City Hall, Salt Lake. He was called on a mission
the latter part of August by President Brigham Young personally,
and started September 12, 1856 with a company, (Apostle Parley P. Pratt
being Captain) to Europe. He labored in the Welsh Mission by appointment,
May 16, 1857, organized and presided over the Cardiff Conference in
