Early Recollections of Logan
Joel Ricks
.
James Quayle, Father (Joel Ricks) and iustin Shepard came to
Cache Valley about June 1 by upper road. We ferried Weber river for
fifty cents, which was paid with a sack of oats. Camped one night
at Little Valley and were in Welisville the next day. B. Williams
and Robert Nelson camped there. We farmed at Smithfield. John
Nelson and about fourteen ether families also farmed there. We lived
in Welisville. Tried to bring a buggy, but. could not because of
high water, tried to ford the river on horse, but could not stake it.
D. Reese and G. Charles were plowing where Filler Hansen now lives.
We saw them from the Providence Bench. Returned to Fsrraingion and one
month later we came back to Cache Valley again. Toraaand Josiah Hendricks
and Brother W. C. Cord came in the same party on July 3. Shepherd
and others followed them. We were in Logan July 4. Bishop Wright
camped on the block opposite to the tabernacle. Ben Williams and
others had moved from Welisville. We stopped with them and had a
meeting. Wright lived on Jack West's lot. Father and Tom and Hendricks
and Card came in through the north fiels. we all went down to see
the west field. Tom and father waded the river and went over on to
the island near Card's farm. We took up land along the river. We returned to Fastnington the last of July, father and boys came and brought
mother and built a log house on the bank site, where mother stayed
all winter. April 1, Monday, Barney Stanford end wife and grandmother.
