Old Snowmass Meadow Residence
Pitkin County, Colorado
1 Tree Nestled Residence
with Expansive Views
2 The Landscape is Reflected
in the Pond
The owners of this dramatic residence
wanted their home to be nestled in
a natural landscape that would be
harmonious with the rural character of
the area. The landscape planning and
design challenges included incorporat-ing
the requests of a local neighborhood
group to provide attractive screening
around the residence, while being sen-sitive
to maintaining the character of
the low native vegetation of the area as
well as the powerful views to the Elk
Mountain range.
Design Workshop responded by provid-ing
carefully inserted aspen, cottonwood,
spruce and pine trees near the resi-dence.
The plantings extended outwards
and softened the mass and form of the
articulated structure. Placing swaths of
native grasses on the slopes around the
home reinforced the connection to the
open meadow landscape. An existing
network of irrigation ditches was modi-fied
to create a bold pond that served as
a water feature, an irrigation supply and
wildlife habitat enhancement.
