Starr Pass is a 950-acre parcel of land two miles from
downtown Tucson. Originally planned as a resort and
residential community, the property went into foreclosure
in late 1989 but has since been acquired by another devel-oper.
Using geographic information system capabilities,
Design Workshop completed a thorough site analysis
that led to a land plan to conserve the site’s sensitive
slopes, floodplains, viewsheds and vegetation. Design Workshop
led the public communication efforts for rezoning approval, including
producing an inexpensive “Question and Answer” brochure to facilitate
public understanding of the project. Starr Pass is regarded by the Tucson
community as a particularly good example of how new development can be
accommodated in a sensitive and environmentally-sound manner. ◆
