Title |
Navajo female hogan interior, Monument Valley, Utah |
Description |
Interior view of a Navajo female hogan displays thick, tall logs for the walls and ceiling with the earth as a floor. Hogans are made with wooden poles usually from piñon or ponderosa pine, juniper, tree bark and covered with clay and mud. A female hogan has a different architectural structure and purpose than a male hogan. The “domed” female hogan is larger and houses families, while the “forked” male hogan serves as a center for communal, ceremonial, and religious purposes. Traditionally, Navajos are a matriarchal (and matrilineal) society. Navajo women own the hogans, and in case of marital separation, women keep the children and most of the family’s properties and livestock. |
