This interview is included in the American Folklore Society Oral History Project held at the Archive of Folk Culture, American Folklife Center, Library of Congress, Washington, D.C. This item is a sound recording of Olive Dame Campbell speaking and singing, dated December 28, 1945 and recorded at an unknown location, talking about her early work as a folksong collector. She remembers the first ballad she heard in 1907 at the Hindman Settlement School in Kentucky. Campbell sings "Barbara Allen" and "Guide me, O thou great Jehovah" on the recording, which is identified as an illustrated lecture by the Library of Congress sound engineer who duplicated the disc. Collection includes two letters from Jim Wolf to Rae Korson of the Archive of Folk Song dated 1957, using the return address of the Council of the Southern Mountains, Berea, Kentucky, and the Campbell Folk School, Brasstown, N.C., describing the original disc recording and discussing its possible duplication by the Library of Congress. Wolf mentions a visit with singer Jean Ritchie and her family in one letter. Manuscripts include photocopies of the labels of the original sound disc and duplicate sound disc.. This collection consists of a manuscripts, 1 sound tape reel (21 min.) (analog, 7 1/2 ips, 1 track ; 7 in.). |

Original glass base lacquer sound disc dated Dec. 28, 1945 was duplicated on tape by the Library of Congress Recording Laboratory September 23, 1958. Tape has two dubs of the recording which is approximately10 minutes duration; total duration 21 minutes. Original sound disc and a duplicate sound disc recorded by the Library of Congress Recording Laboratory are at the John C. Campbell Folk School, Brasstown, N.C. |
