This interview is included in the American Folklore Society Oral History Project held at the Archive of Folk Culture, American Folklife Center, Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.*** Oral history interview with Américo Paredes conducted by Francis A. de Caro and Rosan A. Jordan in Austin, Texas, in 1974 for the American Folklore Society Oral History Project. Américo Paredes, folklorist, poet, educator, and activist for Mexican American studies, was born in Brownsville, Texas on September 3,1915 and died on May 5, 1999. He received his M.A. and Ph.D. in English and folklore studies at the University of Texas in Austin, where he spent his distinguished academic career. In 1967 he helped found the Center for Intercultural Studies in Folklore and Ethnomusicology, and in 1970, the Center for Mexican American Studies at the University of Texas, Austin.
