Roaring River Ranch
1 Historic Barns
2 Ranch Entryway
3 Connecting Stream
The design of Roaring River Ranch is based on the
owner’s love of fishing and the outdoors. The site
lies along Colorado Highway 82, the main road into
Aspen, and originally consisted of a field of thistle
and weeds on which sat a historic homestead in a
state of disrepair. When the highway was widened,
much of the resulting waste material was discarded
onto the property.
As landscape architect and owner representative,
Design Workshop first refurbished the historic barns
and homestead and then created three large ponds
with a connecting stream course, collaborating with
an aquatic design firm to develop a thriving trout
habitat. Contouring and plant materials were used to
provide visual interest for both the users of the site as
well as passersby, who are now greeted by the sight
of a flowing stream, native plantings and interesting
earth forms as they exit Snowmass Canyon.
