Los Padillas Elementary School Wildlife Sanctuary
Albuquerque, New Mexico
Students at Los Padillas Elementary School learn valuable hands-on
lessons about their world in a Wildlife Sanctuary at the school. The
sanctuary provides an array of environmental education opportunities
while preserving the natural habitat of the four acre site. Features include
a mini-botanic garden with four plant communities; an aquatic ecology
study pond and seating area; an outdoor classroom structure for up to 50
students; and an interpretive trail. To round out this unique blend of
ecology and curriculum, all of the school’s wastewater is treated in a
constructed wetlands at the sanctuary, which is disinfected with UV and
fed to the aquatic study pond.
