Castle Creek Campus Master Plan
The Aspen Music Festival and School and the
Aspen Country Day School are two vibrant
institutions that have shared a campus in the
Castle Creek Valley near Aspen for over 30 years.
To assure the joint futures of these valuable
programs, Design Workshop was retained by the
client to identify and express a long-term vision
for the two schools in the form of a master plan.
Consideration of the functional and spiritual
needs of the two schools, along with the forces of
nature and the elements of time, led to the devel-opment
of a new campus plan to be defined by
state-of-the-art facilities for education and per-formance,
a central gathering space that
encourages interaction, a user-friendly layout
and flow, and a setting that complements the
natural and rustic beauty of the place.
Design Workshop collaborated with the client
group to investigate activities and space require-ments
on campus, identify treasures and
troubles, study the impact of the forces of nature
and understand the political framework. To
generate ideas for the development plan, Design
Workshop facilitated a charrette with partici-pants
representing both schools. This charrette
was an integral component of the project and is
where the master plan evolved. As a result of
this successful collaborative effort, a vision plan
was presented to the boards of both schools
where it was very well-received.
