At the existing Kierland Commons
Residential Towers in Phoenix, Arizona,
Design Workshop is creating landscape
architecture for rooftop gathering places
and parking areas. Within a mixed-use
development of condos, brownstone
homes, streetscapes, parking, and retail,
Design Workshop will complete three
landscaped areas that address the chal-lenges
of desert living. The Level Four
outdoor terrace will provide an intimate
garden and plaza setting for entertaining
Kierland Commons offers private and
public outdoor spaces that use carefully-selected
vegetation to create comfortable
living spaces in an arid climate. Year
round, residents and visitors alike can
live and relax in a setting suited for its
natural environment. The project began
in summer 2006 and will be completed
in summer 2007.

Located in Phoenix, Arizona, Kierland is a 730-acre master
planned community development including 216 acres of
single- and multi-family residential, 123 acres of office
space, 107 acres of retail, entertainment and restaurants, and
284 acres of resort and recreational features. At the heart
of Kierland, Kierland Commons provides the commercial,
social and cultural focus of the community with 73 res-taurant
and retail stores in one to three story buildings that
feature condos and office space on upper levels.
Design Workshop worked with Nelsen Architects to create
the land planning, urban design, landscape architecture and
guidelines that have made Kierland a signature destination.
Climate enhancement and a central plaza featuring grass,
palms and pop-jet fountains make Kierland Commons not
only the most distinguished public destination in the area but
a model for similar mixed-use development worldwide.
Kierland is soon to be featured in the book, City by Design -
Phoenix, with full features of Design Workshop accomplishments
on the project.
