Design Workshop was hired by Salt Lake City Corporation, in
conjunction with the American Planning Association to
develop a final use plan for Pioneer Park. The team worked
with a diverse stakeholder group that included representatives
from local businesses, social services advocates, Daughters of
the Utah Pioneers, Salt Lake City law enforcement and Salt
Lake City Arts and Culture. Design Workshop lead this group
through an inclusive public process that included identifying
the assets and liabilities of the park and its surrounding neigh-borhood,
establishing a program that reflects the diverse
community of Salt Lake City and incorporating the planning
objectives identified by the stakeholders in the design.
The 10-acre park is organized around a central green that is
encircled by a promenade and active recreational areas.
The central green is designed to function as an open
playing field or as a space used for viewing events on the
stage to the north. The promenade, which is a wide
decomposed granite pathway, surrounds the park and
leads visitors to the farmers market. Active recreational
uses include basketball, volleyball and bocce ball. The park
is also designed to be flexible as an event space with a main
stage and several small spaces conducive to informal
performances. This allows the park to feature different
characters at different times of day, during the week and
during the four seasons.
Overall, the design for the final use plan creates a
dynamic urban park that highlights the park’s historic
significance while also fulfilling the needs of today's
downtown communities that desire public places providing
refuge, fostering community spirit and offering a variety
of recreational opportunities.
