had
time
to
bond
, or
settle
,
creating
what
we
call
a '
ripe
'
situation.
" He
said
the
wind
was
blowing
,
piling
up
small
drifts
.
Stoker
said
he
tried
to
dissuade
Dr
.
Lincoln
xEllison
and
Fred
L
.
Montmorency
and the
others
in their
party
from
touring
. He
said
it
was
customary
for them to
go
cross-country
into the
upper
Basin
area
every
weekend
.
Stoker
recalled
that the
party
indicated
they were
going
to
ski
in the
lower
areas
and
purchased
all
day
tickets
on the
lift
. "Then
after
they
got
to the
top
of the
ski
lift
they
must
have
changed
their
minds
"
Stoker
added
. The
Ranger
said
the
avalanche
danger
should be
over
with
today
as the
snow
bonds
together
.
Veteran
Ogden
skiers
said
today
this was the
first
time
anyone
has been
killed
in
slides
in the
Snow
Basin
area
.
Robert
Kie-
sel
explained
that
slides
sometimes
are
deliberately
started
to
remove
any
danger
, but the
operation
is
handled
by
experienced
ski
patrolmen
or
rangers
.
Avalanches
that
added
catastrophe
upon
catastrophe
at
Easter
Bowl
in
Snow
Basin
yesterday
were a
silent
enemy
, as
noiseless
as a
soft-pawed
Cougar
. They
stalk
their
victims
almost
as a
Mountain
Lion
hunts
a
deer
,
striking
suddenly
,
noiselessly
and
viciously
. That
is
the
sensation
described
today
by
ski
patrolmen
who
probed
hard-packed
snow
on the
mountainside
for
two
bodies
, and by
two
men
grabbed
and
clawed
by the
fierce
flows
of
snow
. Not a
sound
had
reached
one
victim's
three
companions
when
he
disappeared
,
only
about
a
hundred
yards
ahead
of them. "
We
came
through
some
trees
and his
(Dr
.
Lincoln
Ellison)
ski
tracks
ended
at the
edge
of the
avalanche
path
.
We
knew
he had been
swept
away
"
said
Fred
L
.
Montmorency
. "There
hadn't
been a
sound.
" That was
when
the
first
victim
was
discovered
missing
and
only
minutes
later
Mr
.
Montmorency
en
route
for
help
was
swept
up
by
another
wave
of
cascading
snow
. '
I
decided
to
go
for
help..
.
traveled
a
ways
and
it
looked
like
a
slide
hazard..
.
removed
my
skis
to
carry
them.
" He
started
treading—lightly—across
the
danger
area
. "
Suddenly
I
was
rolling.
"
Swiftly
and
quietly
another
slide
grabbed
him,
rolled
him
down
the
mountain
about
100
yards
.
LOST
POLES
"
I
hit
two
or
three
things
, on the
way
. Then
I
hit
a
Maple
sapling..
.
I
was
completely
buried
.
When
the
slide
hit
I
let
go
of
everything..
.
lost
my
poles
,
pack
and
one
ski.
"
Mr
.
Montmorency
was
hurt
. His
shoulder
ached
and his
face
was
badly
battered
when
he
slammed
into the
tree
that
stopped
his
roll
. But he
climbed
out
and
fought
his
way
to
help
.
Gordon
Huggins
,
one
of the
first
rescue
party
,
felt
similar
sensations
when
he
grappled
with
another
slide
. He had
arrived
at the
site
of the
first
avalanche
and the
probing
search
had
started
.
Just
ahead
of him,
perhaps
five
or
10
yards
, was
John
Anthony
Deane
,
who
was
killed
.
YELLED
SLIDE
"
We
could
see
it
was
treacherous
.
I
tried
to
make
myself
weigh
five
pounds
as
I
walked
"
said
Mr
.
Huggins
. "
Somebody
above
yelled
slide.
"
After
he
looked
up
and
saw
waves
of
snow
curling
down
towards
him,
Mr
.
Huggins
figured
he had
less
than
two
seconds
to
act
. "
I
grabbed
hold
of a
tree
, but
when
the
avalanche
hit
it
ripped
me
loose
like
a
feather
. If
I'd
held
on
it'd
pulled
the
tree
out
by the
roots
. "
Dean
and
I
got
the
full1
strength
of
it.
"
Rolling
with the
tide
, his
skis
and
poles
still
fastened
on,
Mr
.
Huggins
admitted
"
I've
never
been
more
terrified
in
my
life.
"
NEAR
THE
SURFACE
After
the
snow
settled
,
Mr
.
Huggins
found
himself
near
the
surface
,
pushed
himself
out
and
started
looking
for his
skis
and
poles
. "Then
I
realized
I
still
had them on" he
said
.
Minutes
later
they
discovered
that
same
slide
had
buried
Mr
.
Dean
. His
body
was
found
an
hour
later
.
Volunteers
who
crossed
to the
scene
had to
pass
beneath
four
potential
slide
areas
.
While
searching
for the
bodies
they were
working
beneath
three
more
hazardous
areas
that
could
have
funneled
tons
of
snow
,
rock
and
trees
on
them—perhaps
if they
did
not
more
than
talk
loudly
.
