Title
Tony
Grove
Forestry
Camp
,
late
1940s
Description
Sitting
down
for a
meal
at the
Tony
Grove
Forestry
Camp
,
late
1940s
. The
College
offered
summer
camp
as
early
as
1928
,
however
it
appears
that
one
was
never
held
, at
least
on the
Tony
Grove
Site
,
until
1936
.
Students
attended
camp
(it
was
mandatory
for
all
forestry
students)
at the
old
CCC
Camp
at
Tony
Grove
beginning
in that
year
. The
camp
(barracks
and a
mess
hall)
had not been
well
maintained
after
its
original
construction
as a
CCC
camp
(probably
1933)
and
after
the
first
couple
of
summers
much
of the
original
site
was
razed
and
burned
. In
1938
the
College
and the
Forest
Service
entered
an
agreement
to
construct
some
new
buildings
, with the
Forest
Service
putting
up
the
lion's
share
of the
funding
. The
College
was
responsible
for
maintaining
the
site
during
the
spring
and
summer
from
April
through
October
, and
Summer
Camp
became
a
regular
part
of the
forestry
curriculum
thereafter
.
Camp
was
suspended
during
WWII
, but
resumed
in
1946
. The
last
Summer
Camp
was
held
in
1999
;
after
that
year
,
it
was
discontinued
,
due
largely
to the
loss
of a
main
building
to
fire
in
April
1998
. The
Natural
Resources
Field
Station
is
still
open
for
educational
programs
as
well
as
youth
programs
in the
summer
. The
Department
of
Environment
and
Society
from the
College
of
Natural
Resources
now
operates
the
field
station
which
is
used
by
groups
such
as the
Cache
Valley
Search
and
Rescue
,
Edith
Bowen
Laboratory
School
fifth
graders
, etc.
