Minot North Dakota 1935- Structure for control of flood waters Top view - building in extremely cold weather (10° to 40 below) Bottom - Finished Job - 35-42 and 35-50 Another bowl shaped rubble-concrete-masonry spillway built at Burlington near Minot, North Dakota on the Des Lacs River. This structure was built during the winter of 1934 and 1935 when temperatures ranged downward to 40 degrees below zero. The upper view shows the protection provided by the Resettlement Administration, which sponsored the construction work and made the work possible in sub-zero weather. This structure has carried floods up to 5,000 second feet. It stands on a very loose, sandy clay formation which melts readily when touched by water. The crest stands about 25 feet above stream bed. The water cushion at the base of the spillway checks the velocity, and the stream is returned to the natural channel over a secondary crest below the stilling pool. 36-47A, B, C Upper Souris, North Dakota June 9, 1936 Panaram of rubble masonry spillway constructed by the CCC leading from Unit #1 to the river.
