This structure was built in the fall of 1922 for the purpose of checking the drifting gravel which had become a menace to the City of Nephi and to the farms served by the Nephi irrigation system. Each spring high water brought gravel out of the mountain canyons into the city streets of Nephi by way of the delivery canals of the irrigation system. In order to keep the water in the canals gravel was scraped onto the streets until mounds of it had been raised to the height of the top of the first story windows. The spillway is 7 feet high to the crest, with 5 foot wing walls. Below the spillway is a cut-off or check dam to prevent headward erosion of the stream as it reaches the spillway structure. This picture shows the stream in full action during spring run-off eleven years after the structure was first put into operation. Maintenance expenses during the period amounted to nothing. 32-40 First stage in development. 32-41 Nephi, Utah. May 4, 1932. Second stage in development.
