1. Interview with Darnel Haney Interview with Darnel Haney USU alumnus and former basketball player Darnel Haney was interviewed at his home in Ogden on July 31, 2006. He talked about his parents and his childhood in Phoenix, Arizona where he was the first black athlete to play high school basketball. He describes the difficult financial times his family faced after his father was killed, when Darnel was seven years old. Periods & events in his life after that included attending an all-black elementary school, working odd jobs to boost the family income, playing high school sports in Phoenix, joining the Coast Guard, trying out for the 1956 Olympics, playing basketball for Phoenix Junior College, being recruited for Utah State University, coming to Logan in 1959 to attend USU and play basketball, meeting his wife-to-be (Marie Packer) there, and his later career as a teacher at Weber State, then as Director of STudent Activities at Lorraine County Community College in Elyria, Ohio. Throughout he talks about racial attitudes he has encountered during his life.
